Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick review & swatches

In the lipstick world, MAC pretty much have it covered. Their matte lipsticks are rather amazing and provide a fantastically matte finish that a lot of other companies simply can’t reproduce, so for a company to boldly stand up and claim that their new lipstick is more matte than MAC deserves a bit of attention.

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick

This is exactly what Avon are claiming with their brand new True Colour Perfectly Matte Lipstick. The whole advertising campaign appears to be based around being “more matte than MAC”, stating that they have ran tests and that the results are on their side. They are also only a fraction of the price, with MAC selling for £15-£15.50 and these will be starting off at £5.50 (and then increasing to £8).

Naturally then, I had to put this to the test. Today I have every shade from the new Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick collection to show you (there are 15 in all) and I also have a matte finish MAC Lipstick in the shade Sin for comparison purposes. Are these lipsticks really more matte than MAC? Let’s find out.

Packaging

The packaging is pretty similar to other Avon lipsticks as in they come in a rectangular tube with rounded corners with the silver Avon logo around the middle, but this tube comes in a matte finish.

General Observations

To start off, there are a few observations about the collection as a whole that I wanted to discuss first.

All of the shades are quite creamy and make for easy application, but a couple are a bit patchy (see below). They're not drying, but the patchy ones almost make the lips look a bit dry.

I find the longevity to be pretty decent, but they are also removed easily too.

Unlike MAC's vanilla scent, the Avon ones have a slightly fruity fragrance.

Swatches

Now, let’s get into the photo comparisons.

First up is MAC’s Sin for reference:

And here are the Avon swatches:

Wild Cherry

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Wild Cherry

Slightly more matte in person, but a nice and wearable, dark reddy-purple shade.

Pure Pink

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Pure Pink

Very easy to wear pink. More matte than Wild Cherry.

Electric Pink

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Electric Pink

A very bright, summer pink. This does settle into cracks a tad though.

Adoring Love

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Adoring Love

One of the more matte shades and one of the best formulas of the bunch. Gorgeous for spring.

Posh Petal

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Posh Petal

The formula for Posh Petal is not the best of the collection. It makes the lips look dry and patchy.

Coral Fever

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Coral Fever

This shade reminds me of Avon's Ultra Colour Lip Tint Pen in the shade Flamingo. Very nice for spring/summer.

Peach Flatters

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Peach Flatters

Nice formula and a very flattering peach (hence the name!).

Ruby Kiss

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Ruby Kiss

A cool red with blue undertones.

Superb Wine

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Superb Wine

This shade to me is pretty much a dupe for MAC's Sin, photographed above.

Vibrant Melon

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Vibrant Melon

More vibrant in person, the photo doesn't do its brightness any justice!

Perfectly Nude

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Perfectly Nude

Perfectly Nude has what I would say is the worst formula of the collection. It's a shame as it's a nice shade, but it has a very patchy finish and is not easy to apply at all.

Ravishing Rose

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Ravishing Rose

Gorgeously opaque in no time at all. This is one of the shades that Avon appear to be pushing the most and it is easy to see why.

Au Naturale

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Au Naturale

The best nude of the collection, but the formula still isn't as good as a lot of the other shades.

Splendidly Fuchsia

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Splendidly Fuchsia

This has a nice formula and the shade is another that is brighter in person. Definitely a must try if you like bright shades!

Red Supreme

Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Red Supreme

A gorgeous deeper red. Not too deep, but still a knock em' dead red.

UPDATE: You can find the new Spring/Summer 2016 shades here.

So there we have it!

Avon seem to be primarily pushing the shades Ravishing Rose and Coral Fever and I can see why. Their formulas are two of the best in the collection. However, I feel that the majority of others are right up there with them, such as Wild Cherry, Red Supreme, Splendidly Fuchsia, Superb Wine, Adoring Love, Vibrant Melon and Peach Flatters.

The nude/pale shades seem to be the downfall of this collection. If you want to choose one, I definitely suggest Au Naturale. Perfectly Nude and Posh Petal’s formulas just weren’t up to the same standard as a lot of the others which is a shame. The shades are nice, but they just don’t sit so well.

My personal favourites are Wild Cherry, Superb Wine and Red Supreme, but I can definitely see myself adding shades such as Adoring Love and Splendidly Fuchsia to my faves list come spring.

In regards to the comparison with MAC, I don't see them all as being necessarily more matte than MAC, but a fair few of them are about the same and a couple are indeed a bit more. However, let's not forget that MAC also have Retro Matte that is even more matte!

It is a bold claim that definitely sparked my interest and I'm sure that these lipsticks will sell well because of it when they are released in Campaign 5 (in the UK).

Most of these shades are definitely worth you trying out. They have fantastic lasting power and at such an affordable price, why not get a bunch!?

Avon's Perfectly Matte Lipstick will be available from Campaign 5 in the UK for £5.50 (and then increased to £8). I'll be updating as soon as it becomes available to purchase online.

UPDATE: You can now purchase the Avon Matte Lipstick collection at my Avon store (courier or parcel shop delivery only).

What are your thoughts on the new Avon Perfectly Matte Lipsticks? Are they more matte than MAC? What’s your favourite shade?
